Kaieteur News – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has managed to remove 100 illegal firearm arms from the country’s streets, Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum said on Friday during the presentation of 2025 crime statistics.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) reported that of the 100 illegal arms, 57 were pistols, the most commonly recovered, followed by 29 shotguns, 12 revolvers and two rifles.
Meanwhile, Blanhum said the firearms being taken out of circulation is part of the police force’s attempt to curb the country’s crime rate and the procurement of the illegal gun trade.
Speaking at the Christmas Policing Launch for Region 4 ‘A’, the crime chief who appeared virtually, assured that the GPF has intensified its intelligence operations to rid the country of the illegal firearms.
“[The Guyana Police Force is] aggressively pursuing and interdicting illegal networks that supply guns to criminals. During the year 2025 a total of 100 firearms were taken out of circulation. The most commonly encountered firearms that were seized for the year 2025 were pistols. This type of fun gun is the preferred choice of weapon by serious offenders, since it is easily concealed…” Blanhum said.
The crime chief reminded that Guyana does not produce firearms while noting that of the 100 illegal weapons taken out of circulation for this year, 16 originated from the United States of America (USA), while 16 came from Brazil. There are 31 illegal firearms still awaiting verification since their markings and serial numbers were deliberately tampered with in an effort to conceal their origin.
It was reported that though robberies have seen a steady decline over the last decade, armed robberies were the most prevalent this year.
Last Christmas, Blanhum reported that the GPF seized over 178 illegal firearms and made significant progress in dismantling criminal gangs at the Force’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) annual Christmas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony.
