(Kaieteur News) – If de government ain’t keen on bringing back zoning to Georgetown, then de least it could do is zone itself! Because right now, the city looking like a mash-up between a car park, a market, and a maze. And everybody trying to find one lil’ parking spot like it’s gold in the interior.
Every morning, half de country descend pon de city like locusts. Workers, vendors, taxi drivers, people doing lil’ business at GRA, people trying to renew one licence or collect one form and droves of school children And when dem done, everybody trapped in traffic long enough to finish one series on Netflix.
You see, the government not touching zoning because that gon’ upset de bourgeois class — them big ones who got their fancy offices and businesses in residential areas. Zoning gon’ mean rules, and rules gon’ mean some people can’t set up shop wherever they like. So zoning dead and buried, right next to the drainage plan.
But if we can’t zone de city, at least zone some of dem ministries! Move de Ministry of Agriculture somewhere near where crops actually grow. Why it deh in the middle of concrete jungle when de nearest cassava plant deh far away?
Then there’s the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce parked on a street that is already crammed with offices and businesses. That ministry need to move to better headquarters where there is better parking and more space for staff.
And leh we talk ‘bout Human Services. Relocate that out the city too. Let the people who helping humans get a lil’ breathing space themselves! As for GRA, Camp Street can finally breathe if half of dem operations gone elsewhere.
So, if de government nah want to zone the city because it might inconvenience the elite, then zone yuhself, nah! Move out some of dem ministries, ease up the chaos, and let the rest of we finally see what the city pavement and easy parking look like again.
And if that ain’t wuk, move the city out of the city itself!
Talk half. Leff half.
