(Kaieteur News) – A 15-year-old schoolboy was killed on Thursday morning after being struck by a car driven by a female Police Corporal along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Dead is Navindra Mahes, a student of Annandale Secondary School and resident of Lot 44 Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara.
The accident involved motorcar #PAB 214, driven by a 35-year-old female Police Corporal. Police said during inquiries it was disclosed that the motorcar was proceeding west along the northern carriage on Success Public Road in the southern driving lane, where the ‘third lane’ was active at that time.
“Video footage revealed that the female driver continued to proceed further west, while the pedestrian was standing at the median that separates the two carriageways, facing north. The student then attempted to cross the road in a northern direction, using the Pedestrian Crossing, and in doing so, the left-side front portion of the car collided with the schoolboy,” police revealed.
The impact of the collision resulted in Mahes falling onto the roadway, where he sustained injuries about his body. He was picked up by public-spirited citizens and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
“On arrival at the hospital, the pedestrian was seen and examined by doctors on duty, suffering from head injuries and a fractured right leg. He succumbed to his injuries at 09:56 hrs while receiving medical treatment. His body is presently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination,” police said. The female police rank is under close arrest and is assisting with the investigation.
Also, in a statement the Ministry of Home Affairs expressed deep regret over the incident, confirming that the accident occurred around 07:30 hrs and resulted in the tragic death of the young student. The Ministry said police ranks are at the hospital providing support to the grieving family and assured that the matter is being handled with “the utmost seriousness, transparency, and in accordance with established procedures.” The Ministry also extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and school community of Navindra Mahes, describing his death as a “heartbreaking loss.” The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash is ongoing.

All the newspapers talking about this THIRD LANE that was active.
Even the Traffic Chief talking too. Nobody talking about the Pedestrian
Crosswalk being active 24/7. No one talking about warning flashing lights
and signs 100-200 feet before approaching the Pedestrian Crossing ?
Was there any in effect, installed ? And this Pedestrian crossing was not
even at the corner or intersection- just smack middle between roadways.
NOW IS THE TIME TO INSTALL TRAFFIC SIGNAL WITH THE RED/GREEN/
YELLOW COLORS- DIRECTLY AT THIS PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK,
honoring this young man who lost his life. Reduce the Speed on Roads.
Waiting to see what happens to that female Police big shot who should have
been more vigilant on the road, since she stopped at least 100 feet from the
impact.
