(Kaieteur News) – The proprietors of a Chinese supermarket in New Amsterdam, Region Six, are desperate for police assistance in light of a series of seemingly coordinated robberies at their business place.
China Variety Supermarket, located at Lot 19, Pope Street New Amsterdam, has over the course of this year, been a hub for robberies on a small to medium scale.
One of the store’s operators, Liangxing Lin, told Kaieteur News that a group of young men frequently loiters around the building, which is also moderately lined with customers.
The young men would then swipe beverages, eatables, gadgets, and accessories. Footage seen by Kaieteur News confirmed the theft of an electronic bike back in September, valued at $68,000.
Lin said his business has only one security guard who works in the evening. On the night the e-bike was stolen, the guard was off duty.
One employee, who spoke under anonymity, said the issue has been ongoing for quite some time. The men, most of whom appear to be under 30 years old, are somewhat emboldened due to the weak enforcement of security measures there, and police effort.
“One of them watched me full in my face and picked up a bread and a Heineken and walked out,” he said.
The employee said that almost every day, someone enters the store and casually walks out with an unpaid item. The employee also shared that his mobile phone was stolen on numerous occasions.
Items carted off from the supermarket over the months also included shopping carts and costly alcoholic beverages.
The supermarket owners have since plastered images retrieved from video footage, and are soliciting the help of the police and public to help bring the thieves to justice. Several customers have helped in identifying the individuals, most of whom, are from the Angoy’s Avenue community.
The supermarket operators said reports were made at the Central Police Station and have been assured that officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will investigate the matter.
