(Kaieteur News) – The Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) and the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deepen collaboration on projects promoting sustainable land and water management across the Caribbean’s Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The MOU, signed on October 16, 2025, in St. George’s, Grenada, cements a shared commitment to combat land degradation, drought, and water scarcity, while advancing climate resilience and environmental sustainability in the region.
Emphasising the inseparable link between land and water, GWP-C Regional Coordinator Dr. Roxanne Graham described the partnership as “a new and exciting chapter that recognizes the need to manage both in harmony for the benefit of our people and planet.”
Under the agreement, both organizations will collaborate on initiatives involving joint research, project implementation, capacity building, and policy advocacy. Strategic areas include soil and water management, drought and flood mitigation, water quality monitoring, sustainable agriculture, and youth empowerment in natural resource management.
A key component of the collaboration will be the Caribbean Drought Initiative, approved at the UNCCD COP in Saudi Arabia, which aims to assess drought impacts and promote innovative solutions for resilience. PISLM Executive Director Dr. Ronen C.A. Francis explained that the initiative will “develop sustainable practices to help countries cope with drought challenges and build resilience in affected communities.”
On behalf of Chair Professor Paulette Bynoe and the GWP-C Steering Committee, Dr. Graham expressed gratitude to PISLM, reaffirming that the partnership will “translate shared knowledge into meaningful action for sustainable development and climate resilience in the Caribbean.”
