(Kaieteur News) – Georgetown is set for a massive drainage overhaul as part of the government’s wider plan to revitalise and beautify the capital, President Irfaan Ali announced on Saturday.
Speaking at the commissioning of the new Cummings Lodge Water Treatment Plant, President Ali revealed that a comprehensive mapping and condition survey of every drain in the city is already in progress.
“I’ve already directed that the full mapping and condition survey of every drain in the city be done and placed on GIS,” the president said. “After that, we will launch a massive drainage programme across every street, every alley, every single area in Georgetown.”
Ali said the initiative forms the foundation of his administration’s broader effort to “rescue and revitalise Georgetown”, which includes upgrading housing, recreational spaces, and other urban infrastructure.
“Your government is actively pursuing the full rescue of Georgetown,” the president affirmed. “We have to clean it up, fix it up, nice it up, and place it among the most beautiful cities in this region.”
As part of this urban renewal drive, the government will also conduct detailed mapping of housing stock and recreational facilities to guide sustainable urban planning and improve residents’ quality of life.
President Ali urged citizens to partner with government in transforming the capital.
“The people of Georgetown will have choices to make,” he said. “We want you to walk this long journey with us.”
He stressed that revitalising Georgetown is not optional, but a vital component of Guyana’s national development strategy aimed at building a cleaner, greener, and more liveable capital for all.
