(Kaieteur Sports) – The whistle has blown, and the chase for the 6th Annual Republic Bank Under-18 Secondary School Football League crown has officially begun. Day one served up a thrilling opening round yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, where defending champions Chase’s Academic Foundation, alongside Three Mile Secondary, South Ruimveldt Secondary, and Charlestown Secondary, and Charlestown Secondary all kicked off their campaigns with crucial wins.
Before a ball was even kicked, tradition held sway with the ceremonial March Past, but once the formalities wrapped up, it was all business on the pitch, and what a football feast it was!
Chase’s Academic Foundation, the reigning kings of the tournament, were forced to dig deep against a spirited Abram Zuil Secondary side, eventually pulling off a gritty 2-1 comeback victory.
Abram Zuil stunned the champions in just the 14th minute, when Omar Kendall sent a long-range free-kick soaring over the keeper and into the net, shaking up the early proceedings. But Chase’s weren’t going down without a fight. Debutant Kennard Halley marked his arrival in royal blue with a composed finish in the 22nd minute to bring the game level. The momentum swung, and in the 55th minute, Isaiah Ifill showed calm under pressure to slot home what turned out to be the match-winner. The champions showed nerves of steel and reminded everyone why they’re the team to beat.
In a high-tempo second fixture, Three Mile Secondary overcame a scare from West Ruimveldt to claim a 2-1 win. The match started with fireworks as Jeremiah Griffith, known for his set-piece prowess, unleashed a thunderbolt free-kick in the 10th minute to give West the early lead. But Three Mile found their stride after the break, with Lebron Mendonca levelling the scores in the 55th minute before Joshua James sealed the deal in the 70th. It was a well-orchestrated comeback that showed tactical maturity from the Three Mile side.
If you’ve seen this result before, you’re not alone. President’s College fell to a familiar 2-1 scoreline at the hands of South Ruimveldt Secondary. South wasted no time asserting themselves, with Jadon Edwards firing home in the 7th minute. President’s College responded through Daniel Alexander in the 29th, setting up a tense second half. But in the 56th minute, Tyrese Pemberton found the back of the net, tilting the game decisively in South’s favour.
The day’s final clash saw Charlestown Secondary dispatching Dolphin Secondary 2-0, thanks to a second-half brace from Dilshawn Alleyne. Both sides showed defensive grit early on, but Alleyne proved the difference-maker, breaking the deadlock in the 51st minute before doubling his tally 14 minutes later. Dolphin, despite a solid back line, simply couldn’t find an answer to Charlestown’s No. 9.
The 2025 tournament is once again proudly sponsored by Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited, with backing from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ronoca Concrete Inc., Demerara Mutual, MVP Sports, and Guyana Beverage Inc., through its Busta brand. The competition is also officially approved by the Ministry of Education, a strong signal of the country’s commitment to developing the next generation of football talent.
