Have a strategic plan for moving commuters into and out of Georgetown
Dear Editor,
Instead of just blowing his top (KN report ‘Ali blows top over East Bank road chaos’, October 13 2025), perhaps the President and his government could do some formal strategic planning on transport systems before issuing multiple contracts for road building, road repair and maintenance? Perhaps Ministers should endure personally – without an escort of police with sirens – the slow traffic and crazy dangerous driving every day on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) and East Coast Demerara (ECD) roads, which regular users have experienced for the last several years?
It seems that the President has even realised that there is a major river alongside the EBD road, which in other countries would be used for a parallel and traffic-relieving route. By the 1960s, the rivers around Leningrad in Russia were being served by scheduled fast large hydrofoil ferries to move commuters to and from the centre. The President’s idea of using the expensive French- and US-built Coastguard river patrol boats as passenger ferries suggests an almost total absence of government forward planning.
