Region Three Basketball Jamboree set for Oct 11-Dec 13

(Kaieteur Sports) – Basketball fever is set to return to Region Three as the second annual Region Three Secondary Schools Basketball Jamboree bounces off this Saturday, October 11, at the Leonora Secondary School. With 95 games scheduled to be played over a two-month stretch, the tournament promises not only high-level youth competition but also a meaningful impact on students’ lives beyond the court.

Spearheaded by Anthony Kandar, Chairman of the D-Up Basketball Academy, this year’s jamboree has expanded in both participation and vision. A total of ten secondary schools, including eight from region three and two prestigious institutions from Georgetown will battle it out for the 2025 title in what’s shaping up to be a thrilling showcase of emerging talent and community spirit.

Teams chasing the 2025 title will be; D-Up Basketball Academy, Leonora Secondary, Stewartville Secondary, De Willem Secondary, West Demerara Secondary, Vergenoegen Secondary (defending champions), Tuschen Secondary and Qaayim Academy.

These schools will be joined by guest powerhouses from Georgetown, namely St. Stanislaus College and The Bishops’ High School (institutions known for their sporting excellence), who are expected to inject added flair and intensity into the competition.

Last year’s Under-15 champions, Vergenoegen Secondary, will return to defend their title, setting the stage for a possible repeat or a new contender to rise in what is expected to be a hotly contested tournament.

The Region Three School Basketball Jamboree is more than just basketball. According to Kandar, the purpose of the jamboree transcends wins and trophies. “The tournament is much bigger than sports,” he said. “It’s about staying in school, staying away from drugs and alcohol… at least for now, that’s the purpose of these tournaments. It’s about instilling good qualities like discipline, teamwork, and consistency.”

That vision is echoed through the mission of the D-Up Basketball Academy, which has been a vital force in the revival of basketball across Region Three. Once dormant, the sport is now experiencing a resurgence — a direct result of Kandar’s efforts to create structured opportunities for young athletes.

“What we do at D-Up is simple, we’re consistent,” Kandar explained. “Discipline, respect, and hard work are non-negotiables. With those qualities, young people can achieve anything. Our goal is to mold them into the best versions of themselves.”

The tournament also reflects a broader collaborative effort involving educators, coaches, and the wider community. “Coaches and teachers have accepted our vision, and together we aim to instill these values into our students, to shape them into productive members of society,” Kandar added.

This year’s event is proudly supported by the Ministry of Education, along with generous contributions from sponsors such as West Indian Friends that Care (Toronto, Canada), Ellie and Rihanna’s Clothing

Outlet, Century Springs, Aleem and Sons Construction, and several other local businesses and individuals who believe in the power of youth development through sports.

The 2025 Region Three Basketball Jamboree runs from October 11 through December 13. Tip-off is set for 12 noon this Saturday at Leonora Secondary School.
