(Kaieteur News) – Huradiah Village, Region One will see the construction of a new primary school at the cost of some $559 million.

Former Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand alongside village leaders and education officials at Huradiah, Region One in August, for the turning of sod for a new primary school.
The project was awarded recently through the National Procurement and Tender Board (NPTAB) to contractor Trevor & Son General Construction Services. NPTAB stated on its website that the project will be executed at a cost of $559,950,000.
On August 12, former Minister of Education Priya Manickchand and village leaders in and around Huradiah turned the sod for the school.
The education ministry stated that the new primary school will accommodate children from the Huradiah, Acquero, Ko-Ko, Cabrora, and Sheba communities.
The ministry noted, that “This project is one of six new primary schools originally slated for funding through an International Financial Institution (IFI), but due to delays in that process, the government has opted to use local funds to expedite the work.”
Once completed, the new school will accommodate some 250 students who currently attend the Santa Rosa Primary which is overcrowding.
Notably, the ministry also stated that construction is set to begin by October 10, 2025.
In a video message at the time, Minister Manichckhand said that the five communities will come together to decide what name they will give to the school.
“It’s a brand-new primary school. So, this is a project that we had discussed with the community before the IDB was supposed to do it, but the processes with some of the IFIs take really long, and we couldn’t wait any longer, so the government’s local funds will be doing this. Government has overtaken this project, and that’s because the Santa Rosa Primary School is overcrowded, and parents and students and learners have asked for this school,” Manickchand related.
Having been declared by the United Nations (UN) as having achieved universal primary education in the country, Manickhand stated that as communities evolve and the population increases, the government would continue to build to cater for the children.
This publication understands that in terms of primary education, the government has since constructed some 24 new primary schools, reconstructed 21 primary schools, and extended 36 primary school across the country.
