Kaieteur News – The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into allegations of child exploitation involving a 15-year-old student and a police corporal stationed at Mabaruma Police Station, Region One.
The investigation was prompted by a Facebook post linking a police corporal to the Grade 11 student, who is 15 years and 11 months old.
According to reports shared on Saturday by Credible Sources, concerns were raised that the officer was allegedly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a minor, reportedly a 16-year-old girl from Wauna. According to information provided by a concerned citizen to the news entity, the officer and the child were allegedly seen entering hotels and other locations together, sparking fears of child exploitation and abuse of authority, the news entity wrote. Residents have since called for a thorough investigation to protect the welfare of the student and to safeguard the integrity of the Guyana Police Force.
In a statement issued on Sunday, police confirmed that an investigation had commenced into the allegations against the rank. “A preliminary interview was conducted with the student in the presence of her mother. During the interview, the student stated that she never had any sexual relations with the policeman, who is a family friend. Her mother confirmed this relationship and expressed her belief in her daughter’s story. Both the student and her mother provided written statements,” police said.
The Commander of Regional Division One also engaged the School Welfare Officer for the region, Rehanna Chan, who interviewed the student and her mother. They both maintained their position. However, the mother refused to allow a medical examination of her daughter, insisting that the Facebook post was intended to embarrass the child. Chan noted that without the mother’s consent, her investigation could not move forward.
Despite this setback, child protection NGO Blossom Inc. has been invited to conduct a forensic interview, which was scheduled for 11:00 hrs yesterday. Police have assured that the investigation remains active and will be expedited.

Once a concerned “eye witness” able to give such account, then it must
be true. Mother cannot watch the 15 y.o, 24/7. The absent of her father
is paramount.
However, this “father figure” Corporal stationed at Mabaruma Police Station
seen entering Hotels with the girl, surely is not for school lessons, when you
add 2 plus 2 and end up with 3.
It is best to protect this girl, by transferring the Corporal from Mabaruma to
Georgetown since the mother in uncooperative for a medical exam, a clear
sign she knows more what her daughter is up to.
