Minister of Education, Sonia Parag alongside education and regional officials at the Essequibo Technical Institute in Region Two.
Kaieteur News – Persons from Region Two who wish to pursue engineering studies at the University of Guyana (UG), will be able to do so from right within the region in October.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag and presidential advisor on education, Dr. Kofi Dalrymple visited the Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) to identify suitable spaces to accommodate both classrooms and the practical components of UG’s engineering curriculum.
The ministry said some of the classes will run simultaneously with the UG main campus, while others will be determined by the on-site lecturers in Region Two.
“The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the University of Guyana (UG), announced the new initiative to expand access to higher education, with a particular focus on students who were not admitted to the main UG campus due to space constraints. This fulfills a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali, having recognised the large number of applicants that UG has had since it became free,” the ministry stated.
President Ali, speaking at recent commissioning ceremony, had announced that government was seeking to decentralise both medical and engineering studies, commencing with Regions Two, Three and Six.
The president said the decision was made to accomodate the high number of applications to UG, where persons could not be physically accommodated on the campuses.
