Kaieteur News – A father of five is expressing frustration after being charged for allegedly chopping a man whom he claims broke into his home and sexually assaulted his children. But the police have denied the man’s claim, stating that he has a history of making up stories.
The family of seven says they are now shaken and fearful after what they describe as a traumatic experience. According to the 42-year-old father, in an interview with Kaieteur News on Thursday, the incident occurred in the early hours of September 18, while he was on a 12-hour shift at a nearby pump station. His wife was also at work at the time. Around 3:30 hrs, he received a call from his 11-year-old daughter, who told him that a man known to them as “Bobby” had entered their bedroom. The children, aged 3, 6, 11, and 12, later recounted that the man had touched their faces, feet, and bodies while they lay in bed.
“I was at home check up on my children make sure they are alright and tuck them in. so everyone inside the house and the house was locked up. I went back to the location because I have certain hours left there. That’s when I received a phone call. My 11-year-old call me to tell me that a young man by the name of Bobby is inside their room,” he said.
The father said he rushed home armed with a cutlass. Upon entering the house, he allegedly found the intruder hiding under the bed near a broken section of the flooring. He claimed that when he attempted to remove the man, the suspect attacked him with a weapon. “When he came out, he pelted a jook at me, and I broadside him with the cutlass,” the father explained. He added that another man then entered the house and joined the scuffle, but he still managed to grab hold of the intruder. “He pelt me again, and I broadside him. That’s when he got a chop to the hand. So I take him to the station and they carry him to the hospital and lock me up.” He said.
The man’s wife alleged that while her husband was in custody, police told her the intruder first needed to be discharged from the hospital before a statement could be taken. “I tell police that he has to get someone to go to the house, but he(police) told me that they don’t have any vehicle or camera to go to the house,” she claimed.
Her husband remained in custody from September 18 until Sunday, before being released on $50,000 station bail. However, the family said the alleged intruder later went to another police station and reported that he and the father had a disagreement which ended with him being chopped. “He went to another station and said I just see him and chop him,” the father recounted.
The father said that, based on the intruder’s statement to police, he was charged with wounding and given a date to appear in court. However, the intruder himself was not charged, a decision that has left the family even more frustrated.
The parents maintain that their children were touched inappropriately. The 11-year-old recalled: “He start rubbing my face and feet.” Another daughter added: “I was afraid and I cover myself with the bed sheet.” The family now fears the man could return and cause further harm.
But police have disputed the father’s account. Wayne DeHearte Divisional Commander said investigations revealed a completely different version of events, supported by witnesses. “It is not true. The man was not under any bed. This is not the first time he has given that story. The man keeps saying that they had scuffle in the house but nothing like that happened. We had witnesses that saying they had an altercation on the road and he (the father) dealt with him. If the altercation occurred in the house but they are witnesses to prove otherwise, there is no further investigation,” the commander stated. The father is expected to appear in court today to face charges related to wounding.
