Kaieteur News – The government through the Ministry of Education will be utilising a portion of a loan from the World Bank to procure a number of laptops for schools in the country.
This is according to a request for bids issued by the ministry.
According to the document, Guyana has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Guyana Strengthening Human Capital through Education (HCP) and intends to apply part of the proceeds towards the contract.
The ministry noted that the delivery period for laptops is expected to be four months from the signing of the contract. Bids for the contract are expected to open on November 4, 2025 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
Kaieteur News had reported in August 2022, that the government signed a US$44 million loan agreement with the World Bank. The World Bank on its website stated that the development objective of the Strengthening Human Capital through Education Project for Guyana is to improve access and learning conditions in secondary education; and access to technical and vocational education and training aligned with identified labor market needs.
As reported in the media, the government has been enhancing learning in schools through the use of technology. Already, a number of schools across the country have smart classrooms for learners providing a new and innovative way of learning for children.
Supporting this move, it was reported by the Department of Public Information in July that some 153 laptops were distributed to teachers and 147 smartboards to various schools. The article added that a total of 3,130 laptops were also distributed to various schools, over the last five years.
