Kaieteur News – A very aggravated woman who mounted complains of sexual harassment committed against her is reviewing her already exhausted options, since so far, nothing has afforded her much security and peace of mind.
Even more unnerving for her is the apparent negligence on the part of law enforcement officers to whom she made formal reports, to reel in the alleged perpetrator.
Omeana Mars, a make-up artist of Sandvoort Village, West Canje Berbice, related to Kaieteur News that a male individual named Jamal La Fleur who was closely associated with her family, took advantage of their kindness and one evening staked out in their home and sexually molested her.
An evening in September of last year, upon returning home after making a few rounds, the 32-year-old woman said she met La Fleur and her father drinking beers and watching a cricket match. After declining his persistent offer of beers, she settled for a juice, entered her room and closed the door to ready herself for bed.
“Maybe about 15 to 20 minutes later, I heard a knock on the door. When I opened the door, he was standing there. However, I’m thinking that he’s gonna use my apartment to exit through the front door, ‘cause it’s either he go up the stairs to the other front door, or he use the shop which was closed. I opened the door, he came in, my mom followed shortly behind him, and they ended up talking another 10 minutes.”
Her mother, she explained, ensured that the young man was courteously sent off, and he went on his way. Mars then resumed her preparation for bed.
“About 10 minutes after, I started hearing a movement coming from the second room that is adjacent to my bedroom,” she said, after which she asked her mother to accompany her, having watched a horror movie earlier and therefore was too afraid to investigate the source of the sound by herself. The window in the other room was up, she noticed, and she proceeded to close it, “not knowing that when I closed the window, he was actually inside the house already.”
Mars recalled that “between sleep and wake,” she observed the movement of a shadowy figure, but held it to be merely the mental implications of the horror movie she watched. Prayerfully she went back to sleep.
“Again, between and wake, the shadow moved…. I saw it move, and it moved from behind the blind and walked out. When it walked out, it was this person, Jamal La Fleur,” she shared, clad only in his underpants.
Her then four-year-old niece who also shared a bed with her, was present, and Mars recounted her instinct to protect her immediately coming into play as she threw herself over her, while smitten with panic and uncertainty on what would happen.
“And this person just run up to me and started pulling and tugging at me, and telling me ‘I gadda get you’ and stuff like that. I did realise who it was and we literally started a fight,” a struggle which she said lasted between two to five minutes. Due to the home setup, her room is essentially sound-proof when the door is locked.
The keys were left in the front door, she recounted, and La Fleur seized his chance to escape. She then hurried to relate to her mother what had occurred. In his haste to escape, he left his clothing, she said. Those were taken to the police station as evidence. After successfully evading the police for some time, La Fleur was apprehended and placed before the court.
Mars was left baffled and disappointed that because of a minor issue with details, he was found not guilty. She had said that when she called out to her mother, her mother was on the stairs in the house, but that her mother, in her separate segment of questioning, had given that she was on the bed.
“Keep in mind, right over mommy’s bed there’s a step going upstairs. When she gave her statement, she said that she wasn’t on the steps, she was on the bed, and the judge did say that because the two statements weren’t adding up in that part, that’s the reason why they found him innocent.”
“Even with all the evidence I presented, the window that he sprained, his clothing that he left there and all of that, his defense was that he was never there,” Mars told this newspaper.
“A couple of days ago, on Saturday last weekend…the person walked into the yard with a hat hiding their face. He walked pass my mom and dad and he went straight up to the shop and he didn’t say anything, he was just standing there.”
She said her mother approached to see who it was, and found it was La Fleur who responded when she called him. She said her mother hurled expletives in anger over the incident. Also incensed, the young man squared up to her mother, aggressively inquiring whether she will sell him or not. As the mother withdrew, the family made a report to the police station.
Seemingly embolden now, having been freed by the court, the young man is “blowing kiss,” according to her.
In light of her traumatic ordeal and the subsequent dissatisfactory outcome of the trial, Mars has discarded all hope in Guyana’s justice system, one which she denounced as a failure to her and other women in the country.
“At his point I’ve lost faith in the Guyana Police Force because I’ve made several reports to the station and nothing is being done. I don’t know where to go from here. I was advised to go get a restraining order and I’m in the process of doing that. I’m not sure what that little paper is going to do, but hopefully it would protect me somehow with him coming too close to my home or even if he sees me in public.”

Forget the restraining order- that piece of paper don’t carry no weight.
Get a gun and use it to protect yourself, since you are obviously being’
harassed by this deviant.
You can’t rely on the GPF for your protecting your life. You have to do so
yourself. Just a few weeks ago, 3-4 women have been murdered by their
abusers, live in partner.
