Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday announced that the Guyana Government has signed an agreement with Northwell Health out of New York for the implementation of emergency medical services in Guyana.
The Head-of-State made the announcement while speaking during a meet-and-greet reception with the Guyanese Diaspora in New York. The president is attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
“Only today (Tuesday) we signed another agreement with Northwell who will be implementing our emergency medical services in Guyana, and they will be managing that service while we build the capacity over the next three years,” he said.
President Ali said his government is building a world-class healthcare system and to achieve its goals is partnering with the best in the world, including Mount Sinai Hospital and Northwell located in the United States of America.
Further, the Head of State said that the Government is building 12 new state-of-the-art hospitals, some of which have already been commissioned. He also told members of the diaspora that the government is in the process of upgrading all healthcare facilities across the country.
“No Guyanese, whether at home or visiting, should ever have to question the quality of healthcare they receive,” he stated.
Meanwhile, in February President Ali during an address to the nation said that discussions were being held with Northwell to enhance Guyana’s emergency healthcare.
“We understand also that the national emergency healthcare system that we have to invest in this. So very soon we are going to put together a team to look at ways in which we can enhance emergency healthcare,” the president said at the time.
He noted that citizens have been going to the Georgetown Public Hospital and other hospitals for emergency healthcare.
“So, we are working now on looking at a world-class scalable model Emergency Healthcare System and we have had discussions with Northwell for example as to a scalable model that is applicable to Guyana in which we can have emergency diagnostic centre in every single region supporting the regional hospitals and delivering these very essential and key services,” he explained back in February.
In terms of enhancing emergency medical services, both President Ali and Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony said that the government is working to establish a drone blood delivery system to reach remote areas.
Last month, Minister Anthony disclosed that efforts are being made to have a section of the COVID hospital at Lilendaal, East Coast Demerara retrofitted to accommodate a national ambulance authority.
“From there you can have ambulances being dispatched. You’ll have a full command centre, and whether it’s ambulances on land or in river, and we are working also to be able to call for airplanes that can go out to do the medevac,” the Minister stated.
