Kaieteur News – A fresh and sweet trend is making its way to Guyana and it’s all about cake. On Sunday, October 19, 2025, Promenade Gardens will host the country’s first-ever cake picnic that has made waves across social media platforms, with several countries already hosting their own event.
This event is curated to bring people together through one of Guyana’s favorite traditions, baking and sharing of cake.
The Cake Picnic idea first gained popularity on TikTok before spreading to Instagram, immediately caught the attention of its local organizer, Ronetta Alexis Austin.
“I wanted to create something fun, fresh, and lighthearted that brings people together around food and what better way than cake? I saw how popular the trend was overseas and thought, why not introduce it here with a Guyanese twist,” Austin explained.
Austin is the owner of Sweet Confections. She began baking for her family and close friends in July 2019, and later launched her business officially. Austin initially started with cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats, but due to the high demand for her cheesecakes on a daily basis, she eventually transitioned to solely making cheesecakes.
At the cake picnic, attendees can look forward to much more than sweet treats. The event promises the perfect picnic atmosphere, networking opportunities for bakers, suppliers, and cake lovers, along with cake-inspired games to keep the crowd engaged.
Since it’s a bring-your-own-cake event, creativity is at the heart of the experience. Participants are asked to show up with cakes they’re proud of whether traditional black cake and fruit cake, or intricate designs and modern takes like cheesecakes.
Austin said, “Everyone must bring a cake that expresses their creativity, something they’re proud to share. The whole idea is about showcasing individuality and creating a space where people can enjoy each other’s efforts.”
The cake picnic event also taps into the role cake plays in life’s biggest celebrations. From weddings and birthdays to the traditional Christmas black cake, cake has long been a symbol of togetherness. The picnic aims to celebrate this cultural love while blending it with a modern social trend.
Austin said the response so far since announcing the event has been overwhelming. “People are really excited, even more than I expected. I’ve had bakers, families, and even businesses reaching out to be part of it. Some people told me they were just waiting for something fun and different like this to happen,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Austin envisions the Cake Picnic becoming a signature annual event or even branching out into themed versions across communities. Beyond the cakes themselves, she hopes participants leave with new connections and lasting memories. “It’s not just about cakes it’s about building community and sharing joy,” she noted.
The inaugural Cake Picnic takes place on Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 14:00 hours at Promenade Gardens. Participants are encouraged to register by contacting (592) 612-2189. The dress code is florals, and attendees should walk with their picnic blankets, bring a cake to share, and be ready for an afternoon of fun, laughter, and plenty of sweetness.

This is a bad situation becoming worst… a Cake Picnic ?
I visualize people stuffing their faces and belly with all these delights, not
even thinking about their health with existing medical conditions.
Thousands are already suffering from diabetes, with limited facility for treating
kidney disorders. Government is still to deploy 15-16 addition dialysis machines
that are on order. It’s not the “sweet” but a combination that make a cake that
may be harmful for diabetics. Anyways- who is watching what you eat ?
