Kaieteur News – Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) Aubrey Norton said his party has already commenced a review of the APNU’s performance at the recently held general and regional elections, and will be developing strategies to understand the reason why the party lost votes with the rise of new political contenders.
Addressing the media during the APNU’s press conference on Friday, Norton was asked about the areas the Coalition will be focusing on at the parliamentary level, and its new approach now that it has lost its place as the main opposition.
At the September 1 general and regional elections, APNU acquired some 77,988 votes, giving the Coalition 12 seats in the national assembly. The party in 2020 raked in 217,920 votes, taking up 31 seats in parliament.
In a move that dethroned the APNU as the main opposition party, new comer We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) copped 16 seats, also winning APNU’s stronghold Region 10 and coming close to the PPP in the other regions. APNU suffered a massive defeat losing 139,932 of its 2020 votes.
Norton said he has proposed reviewing the way APNU has been operating with new parties, among other things, and figuring out what he terms the phenomenon of why when new parties emerge, the support base of his party appears to go in another direction. The Coalition leader said this year’s losses was not the first in an election cycle.
“May I say this. One of the things that emerged, that I’ve looked at, which never dawned on me before, was that in the 1957 elections, we did well. Then came the 1961 elections, in which the United Force (UF) emerged as a new party, and we lost seats to them. In 2006, the AFC came as a new party, and we lost seats to them again. In 2025, WIN came as a new party. We lost seats to them.
It’s not the first time, it’s not the second time, it’s the third time. It has happened, under the leadership of Forbes Burnham, it happened; under the leadership of Robert Corbin; and now under my leadership. So, it is something we have to analyse and look at today, how we move forward” the politician stated.
Norton suggested that the issue is probably signaling that the support base might be more welcoming of new persons. This, he noted, must be analysed.
