Kaieteur News – Leader of the We Invest in Nation (WIN) party Azruddin Mohamed has said that the opposition-nominated commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) should do the honorable thing and resign.
On Friday, Mohamed told Kaieteur News that he plans to speak with leader of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Aubrey Norton on the matter. Earlier Friday, at a press conference Norton told reporters that he has no intention of asking the opposition-nominated commissioners to resign to allow WIN’s representative to sit on the commission.
WIN won 16 seats, APNU 12, Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) 1 and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) 36 seats.
Mohamed said, “…of course… We expect them to do the honorable thing and resign, and we will approach him because, of course, we are the opposition not Norton, so we’re expecting them to resign.”
Asked if he expects the opposition commissioners: Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Desmond Trotman to resign with alacrity, Mohamed said he expects them “to resign, ASAP.”
Norton told reporters that the GECOM commissioners – three representing the opposition and three government – are permanent and there is no law in place to have them removed.
Commissioners Vincent Alexander and Charles Corbin are representatives of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) while Desmond Trotman is affiliated with the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA). The PPP/C nominated commissioners are Clement Rohee, Sase Gunraj and Manoj Narayan.
At the press conference hosted by Norton, he was asked about the existing composition of the Commission given that WIN secured 16 seats, thereby making it the main opposition party following the September 1, general and regional elections.
“[Do you believe] any or all three of the commissioners who were nominated by the opposition previously should now make way for new nominees given the new configuration arising out of the elections?”
In response, Norton said: “As far as I’m aware, there’s nobody with the authority to move anybody from the Commission except the person on the Commission decides that, that person is going. There is no law to move them.”
Pressed further on whether he would persuade any of the commissioners to resign and make way for representation from WIN, Norton said, “Well, I don’t know that I want to do that…Because I don’t think it is the best thing for me to do at this stage,” he told reporters.
Long standing commissioner, Vincent Alexander when asked to comment on Norton’s position told Kaieteur News that “Norton is correct”.
Calls to leader of Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) Amanza Walton-Desir. Walton-Desir’s party, FGM, secured one seat.
The Laws of Guyana notes that Chairman or any other member of the Elections Commission may only be replaced if they resign, is incapable of discharging their functions due to illness or death.

The Opposition Leader appoints 3 “opposition” commissioners at Gecom.
NORTON has lost the position as OPPOSITION LEADER in Parliament from
the just concluded elections. Mohamed is now the new Opposition Leader and
should appoint these New Commissioners. Those “3 Amigos” of the old
opposition, need be replaced since they are not the main opposition party in
parliament. Or be kicked out by someone, possibly the Speaker.
