Democracy isn’t owned – It’s earned

The 2025 elections showed us that no matter how much money you spend, how many contracts you hand out, or how tightly you control the State machinery, you cannot buy the soul of a nation. The PPP/C, with all its advantages—State media, constitutional commissions, private sector loyalty, and even the comfort of international sympathizers—still only managed 242,498 votes. With turnout at 49 percent, that translates to less than a quarter of the population actively supporting the government.
Meanwhile, 195,969 Guyanese voted for parties outside of the PPP/C. These citizens stood free of threats and untouched by bribery. Their votes were cast with conscience and courage, and they represent the true guardians of our democracy.
No one symbolizes this more than Azruddin Mohamed. He was targeted, heckled, and chased from meetings in PPP/C strongholds. He endured a smear campaign, including the baseless “ambassador to Venezuela” fabrication—a desperate attempt to discredit him. Yet, despite intimidation and ridicule, he prevailed. WIN emerged as the new opposition force, not because of fear, but because thousands of Guyanese dared to choose differently.
This exposes a fundamental truth: PPP/C does not own the people. The arrogance of believing that voters are possessions is the same behavior they once accused the PNC of practicing. Now, they have become the very thing they condemned.
The lesson of 2025 is simple—democracy is not owned, it is earned. Respect belongs to those who stood unbought and unafraid. And in this election, Mohamed and the 195,969 Guyanese who cast their votes for change proved that integrity and courage still have a place in Guyana’s future.
