Kaieteur News – Popular television journalist, Travis Chase has filed three separate lawsuits against social media commentator, Mikhail Rodrigues, also known as ‘Guyanese Critic’ claiming in excess of $15 million for defamation.
The Statements of Claim (SOC) drafted by attorney Eusi Anderson notes that Chase is claiming damages in excess of GY$5 million each against the defendant for defamation live streamed and published on Facebook which occurred on 14th August, 2025 and later published on the said date on the Facebook page of the defendant.
According to the documents, Rodrigues accused the journalist of being bought by the politician, Azruddin Mohamed and his family.
The social media commentator accused him of taking instructions from the Mohameds in relation to his job as a journalist and linking him to the businessman who has been sanctioned by the United States (U.S.) Government.
Rodrigues also linked the journalist to the Venezuelan Government and the Venezuelan President, when no such links exist.
The lawsuit noted that the words uttered by Rodrigues implies or seeks to imply that he is politically biased and is a propagandist, is dishonest and corrupt journalist.
The document outlined that the words uttered by Mr. Rodrigues can also be interpreted to mean that he abuses his platform as a journalist to mislead and or confuse particularly the poor Guyanese people.
“These statements were calculated to expose the claimant to hatred, ridicule, contempt and to damage his professional reputation and credibility. The words used identified the claimant by his full name Travis Chase on the four posts published on the defendant’s Facebook account, so there can be no mistake to his identity,” the SOCs said.
It continued: “These statements were calculated to expose the claimant to hatred, ridicule, contempt and to damage his professional reputation and credibility. The words used identified the claimant by his full name Travis Chase on the four posts published on the defendant’s Facebook account, so there can be no mistake to his identity.”
According to the SOC, Chase has denied all of the allegations leveled against him which have injured his reputation and diminished his credibility in the eyes of Guyanese public and the international community.
As a result, Chase is seeking inter alia, a permanent injunction restraining Rodrigues whether by his servants and/or agents from further publishing or causing to be published by any means whatsoever, whether electronic or print, the words complained of in the Facebook publication dated August 14, 2025 on his page ‘Guyanese Critic’ and available thereafter on the world wide.
He also wants the court to order Rodrigues to retract and apologise for the false, malicious and defamatory statements impugning his character via electronic / online publications.
