Kaieteur News – For the 2025 General and Regional Elections, over 250,000 electors in key districts controlled by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) did not turn out to vote at Monday’s polls.
A calculation of the declaration of general election results by district reveals that of the 757,690 eligible voters on the Official List of Electors (OLE), some 442,550 eligible voters participated in Monday’s electoral process. As it relates to Regions Three, Four, Six and Ten – electoral districts that are usually dominated by the incumbent PPP and APNU, it was revealed that between those four regions alone, 253,837 electors did not vote.
According to the district declaration form published by the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM), the PPP maintained its hold in District Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) by garnering 48,055 votes of the 71,561 who appeared to vote in that district. Newcomer We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) earned 12,969 votes, while APNU got 8,992 votes, Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) got 522 votes, Alliance For Change (AFC) got 322 votes, and Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) got 138 votes.
Notably, there were 116,876 electors on the OLE for this district. Of the 71,561 electors who appeared to vote, 311 ballots were spoiled, 17 destroyed ballots, and 563 rejected ballots, which included ballots without an official mark, unmarked or unclear ballots, and ballots marked for multiple parties. At the 2020 General and Regional Elections, for District Three, a total of 72,942 persons cast their ballots of 100,758 electors who were on the OLE. At that election, PPP won Region Three with a total of 47,855 votes.
Historically, the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNCR), the majority party of the APNU coalition, dominated District Four (Demerara–Mahaica). However, according to district declaration form for this district, the PPP defeated APNU for the first time.
District Four is the most populated electoral district with 323,436 eligible voters. However, of that number, only 182,209 voted. PPP received 87,536 votes, APNU came second with 46,956, slightly above WIN with 41,607, FGM got 2,431, AFC with 1,765 and ALP with 497 votes. Of the 182,209, 743 ballots were spoiled, 76 destroyed and 1,417 were rejected which includes ballots without an official mark, unmarked or unclear ballots, and ballots marked for multiple parties.
Further, the declared results for District Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), show that 61,624 of the 111,554 electors on the OLE cast their ballots. PPP secured 41,320 votes maintaining its hold on the region. WIN got 12,623 votes, APNU received 6,223 votes, FGM got 361, AFC received 315 votes and ALP got 132 votes. Notably, of the 61,624 votes, 466 ballots were spoiled, 26 destroyed and 650 rejected.
In District Ten (Upper Demerara/ Upper Berbice), APNU was dethroned in this region by newcomer WIN. Of the 38,460 electors on the OLE for Region Ten, only 21,195 voted. WIN received the most votes with 10,458, APNU with 5,334, PPP with 4,260, FGM with 662, AFC with 210 and ALP with 85. Notably, of the 21,195 ballots cast, 186 were rejected, 8 were destroyed and 91 were spoiled.
