Kaieteur News – With a less than 50 percent of voter turnout General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo said that his party has clinched victory at Monday’s elections and will return to government with a larger majority than it obtained in the 2020 polls.
Although not yet confirmed by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) numbers tabulated from the available Statements of Poll (SOP’s) suggest that less than half of the 757,690 eligible voters cast their ballots. In an interview with News Source, Jagdeo informed that his party was in possession of 99% of the SOP’s, the other 1% coming from tally sheets, where SOP’s weren’t received as yet. Their internal tabulation was completed about 05:00hrs on Tuesday.
A smiling Jagdeo said: “We’re good at mathematics. We were good in 2020 at mathematics and we’re good at mathematics again, and it’s simple now.” The PPP’s general secretary explained that the elections are now over and it is now just the question of mathematics, anyone who can use a calculator would know the results.
He said the PPP will be going into government comfortably and with a big margin. “…now the PPP will go into the National Assembly with a bigger majority than it did in 2020. That’s very clear from the trend you were seeing and from the gap between our total votes and that of WIN and APNU and all the other small parties combined. There’s a substantial difference between the votes we garnered at the elections and what they did combined,” he explained.
Noting that they will have an increased majority in the parliament, Jagdeo said they have been trying to signal this to the opposition several times at his press conference in the past, based on their polls. “I did say that the WIN party was going to do damage to APNU and they would do so because of a combination of things. One that there are several people in APNU or who supported APNU in the past who did not want to support APNU again and they were looking for a party that is not the PPP,” he said.
Admitting that We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) benefitted from this, Jagdeo went on to accuse the party of paying out large sums of money to persons “to induce people to vote for him.” “…thirdly, they were running a social media campaign based on lies which resonated with a lot of young voters. Voters who might be impressionable and there was a large number nearly 100,000 new voters on their list. So a combination of those things led to WIN displacing APNU, as the party that is second ranked in these elections,” he highlighted.
Jagdeo said that it is now up to APNU given the strategy they had which was that somehow they felt by collaboration with WIN, would have caused the PPP to re-enter office as a minority government. “They almost encouraged their supporters over time to speak favourable things about WIN and Azruddin Mohammed. He reminded that the PPP has pointed out that this was something that was not going to happen, and they were correct. However, he said APNU being in the wrong has to now face the consequences, “that’s why Congress Place must be a very sad place today. I’m sure that a number of people who were vilified by the APNU trolls (and) who left APNU and came to the PPP, they must be very happy today because they came to a party that has won the elections outright and with a bigger majority in parliament and their party has now been reduced to number three in the parliament.”

Does the editor of Kaieteur News capable of critical thinking? The headline was that there was a 50% voter turnout of the 757,000 names on the voters lists. Did they realize that those “extra” names that they were originally complaining about as bloated consisted of Guyanese at home and abroad? Why would they expect a larger than actual turnout.
