Guyanese singer, Shawn English
By Shermon Hawker
Kaieteur News – Across the local gospel scene, the name Shawn English is known. Despite being somewhat withdrawn from the music scene in recent years, the singer is readying for a comeback of note, even as he is maneuvering through other social elements demanding his focus as of recent.
At age 23, Shawn English emerged triumphant in the former GTT’s now defunct Jingle and Song Competition of 2006, outshining an array of the finest competitors in the show’s history. In that era, the music scene here was dominated with talents the likes of Eddie Neblett and Cherlyn Maloney, and a placement at the proverbial mountaintop was to be earned by undeniable musical prowess coupled with consistent and convincing delivery.
Winning the competition catapulted him to instantaneous local fame, owing to its celebrated status as Guyana’s premiere talent showcase competition, which from its inception attracted countrywide interest. From that point onwards, English would keep his feet on the accelerator with his passion, and from his creative pen issued hits.
The competition served as the springboard for many of Guyana’s top talents, yanking into the spotlight names like Brandon Harding, Timeka Marshall, Carlvin Burnett and Diana Chapman, all of whom have capitalized on the major momentum and indelibly scribbled themselves in the journals of Guyanese musical identity.

English is looking to re-enter the Guyana’s musical scene
English withdrew from the spotlight for a considerable period.
With his musical life on a partial pause, English wore multiple hats of employment. Just recently, he worked as a security officer. During this stint, he found himself reeled into the charm of infectious music that permeated a New Amsterdam nightclub which contracted the firm he was employed with for security purposes, and unleashed to the surprise and delight of patrons his repertoire of rhythmic movements.
This generated immediate buzz across the local social media, which led to conflict with his agency. Speaking of it, he shared: “The company had a little bit of a problem: they couldn’t find a location to put me on, cuz’ everybody was a little bit against the dancing security officer working for them, cuz’ they thought I was un-serious or was on drugs or something.”
Resignation soon followed. Reflecting on the viral video, regret and disappointment have taken hold of him, since according to him, he let his company down.
To date, the singer has released three albums for his catalog. The most popular hits comprising his discography include ‘Let your light shine’, ‘Rejoice’, ‘365 Summer’, and ‘Shake your chains off’.
Being a Guyanese gospel talent came with its perks for him. Gigs and showings spanned 15 countries under his official work and music arrangement, including to the United States, Columbia, Costa Rica, India and several Caribbean countries.
Though a singer, his interests stretched to different avenues. He once took up occupation at Teleperformance. But for all his loftiest attainments, the Jingle remains the most pleasant in his mind.
He said, “Of course, the Jingle competition that I won in 2006. That was a great accomplishment.”
The Guyanese singer’s said soul icon, Celine Dion is his all-time favourite singer and musical inspiration owing to her poignant melodies and towering vocal ranges. Though it may be conflicting to digest, with him being a gospel artiste, he also pinned Hip-hop Legend Eminen and Dancehall megastar Vybz Kartel, acclaimed for their rhyming flair and finesse, as some of his inspiration.
Closer to home in the Caribbean, Papa San, DJ Nicholas, and Samuel Medas completes his collection of favourite musicians.

While not 100% active at present, and is admittedly not giving much focus on marketing his music for well over three years, the vocalist has not binned his love for the music art form. In fact, dreams of entering the world stage as a bona fide singer and savor all the dividends of mainstream recognition.
English speaks (pun intended) of more than musical gratification. Now at age 41, he craves natural fulfillment by the creation of his own home and family.
“My intention for the future is to settle down in Berbice. I wanna transfer my land holdings and everything to Berbice, and I wanna raise a family in Berbice…I am currently making some progress.”
English is directly associated with Project Development Consultancy. At his convenience, he vends freshly bottled coconut water, and he also adds vital input to Subah and Daughters Delight, a top-notch catering establishment in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, where he also has taken up residence for the last three years.
He is confident in his ability to deliver what he has gained recognition for, and has promised to return with much gusto and purpose.
“I just want the fans to know that I will continue to do positive music…I will continue to use my talent that God has given me to bless the culture.”
Fans and supporters are to know that there is pulse on the musical interest of Shawn English, and to be assured, he will be back with more musical content in 2026, for Guyanese and even beyond.
