Man dies after car slams into truck
Dead Charles Richards
Kaieteur News – A 64-year-old man died in an accident on Wednesday at the intersection of the Eastern Carriageway of Heroes Highway and Mocha Main Access Road, at Mocha Village, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The accident occurred at approximately 05:30 hours and claimed the life of Charles Richards of Lot 31 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown.
The vehicles involved in the accident were a motor lorry bearing registration number GAH 9771, owned and driven by 29-year-old Arif Haniff of Cove and John, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and a motor car bearing registration number PAH 7906 which was owned and driven by the deceased.
According to police, the car was proceeding east along Mocha Main Access Road, when it approached the intersection of Heroes Highway and Mocha Main Access Road. Police relayed that there is a STOP at that intersection to regulate the movements of traffic.

According to reports, Richards failed to comply with the sign and continued east, ending up in the path of the lorry, which was proceeding south along the Eastern Carriageway of Heroes Highway.
As a result of the collision, both vehicles were damaged. Richards received injuries to his head and other parts of his body. When the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) arrived, the man was examined and pronounced dead at the scene.
“The body of the deceased was then escorted by the police to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where the body was kept for cold storage awaiting a post-mortem examination,” police said.
The car and the lorry were examined by a licensing and certifying officer. A notice of intended prosecution was prepared and served to Haniff. A breathalyser test was done, however, no trace of alcohol was found in Haniff’s system. He is in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
