Kaieteur News – Three persons died on Tuesday after two trucks collided and caught fire on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway in the vicinity of Loo Creek.
The dead persons have been identified as 73-year-old Lionel Campbell and an unidentified passenger who was traveling with him and a Venezuelan woman who was only identified as ‘Melie’.
The accident occurred around 12:30hrs and involved two motor lorries: #GXX 1546, which was loaded with sand and driven by Campbell and #GAG 313, driven by a 29-year-old Venezuelan national identified as Carlos Yasmanie.
Each truck had one passenger. The identity of Campbell’s passenger remains unknown, while the occupant of Yasmanie’s truck was identified only as ‘Melie’.
Enquiries disclosed that Melie and Yasmanie have no place of adobe and would usually sleep in the truck.
According to police, initial investigations revealed that Yasmanie was speeding north along the western lane of the highway when he encountered a car (number unknown) that slowed down abruptly to navigate a pothole.
“On seeing that, the Venezuelan driver said he swerved in a north-eastern direction to avoid a collision with the car, and in the process collided head-on with motor lorry #GXX 1546, which was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane,” police said.
Following the impact, Yasmanie’s truck caught fire. His passenger, who was seated in the front left seat, was trapped inside and burnt to death.
Yasmanie was pulled from the burning vehicle by public-spirited citizens; he suffered multiple injuries, including a broken left foot and lacerations.
“The Ambulance Service, along with the Fire Service, was summoned to the scene and arrived with a team of Emergency Medical Technicians, who went into action,” police said.
Yasmanie was later transported in a conscious state by EMTs to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remains in stable condition.
The EMTs pronounced Campbell and his passenger dead at the scene.
The three bodies were then taken to the Pensioners’ Mortuary in Linden for cold storage, pending post-mortem examinations.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
