Kaieteur News – Members of the public have been cautioned against disruptive conduct or face the guaranteed consequences, as the country heads to the polls in less than six days.
The strongly worded warning was issued by Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Errol Watts.
Watts, delivering remarks at the commissioning ceremony for the new B-Division (Region Six) police headquarters, declared that anyone who violates the laws of Guyana, especially those relevant to elections, will be accordingly penalised.
Addressing ranks of the Central Police Station, the deputy commissioner gave clear orders that they are not to “cherry-pick” on or make or compromises with offences, but to duly dispense with the enforcement of law and order.
To discourage any idea of persons provoking unrest across the country in the lead up to what many perceive as a tense period, Watts confirmed that the police will be coming down on such individuals and activities.
“Anyone who attempts to light any fire on the road, or to block any street…in any part of this country, will be dealt with by the Guyana Police Force. That is a warning, that is a caution to you,” the senior police officer signalled.
He advised that citizens should commit to exercising their right to vote, and assured that same will be expedited peacefully. He further encouraged that voters should then retire to their homes or tend to other obligations while awaiting the results of the September 1 elections, and ensure that they stay clear of any illegal engagements.
Watts summarised the joint services voting process last Friday as smooth, and urged civilians to reflect same.
“It’s the public’s time to go and exercise their franchise,” he noted.
The deputy commissioner also reminded ranks that they are subjected to the instructions of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) at each polling station for all elections-related matters.
“For that particular day, between six in the morning to six in the evening, the police are under the direction of the presiding officer. We have done this training before, and all our members are fully involved…let us go out there, let us discharge our duties professionally, and let us ensure that Guyana’s democracy is protected by professional policing in all parts of this country,” he implored.
