Newly commissioned Region 6 police headquarters

Kaieteur News – The Central Police Station in New Amsterdam on Tuesday officially cut the ribbon at a simple ceremony for a new headquarter for the region.

The much-needed facility replaces the decades-old, dilapidated structure that formed part of the principal physical core for policing in Regional Division #6 (East Berbice-Corentyne), along Coburg Street.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, Permanent Secretary Andre Ally, Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ of Police Errol Watts, B-Division Commander, Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus, along with other ranks stationed at the New Amsterdam location were present for the commissioning.

In his feature address, the minister underscored the importance of infrastructure in the execution of police operations. With these upgrades available, he made clear his expectation that the police in turn maximise their use so that ordinary citizens can benefit.

“Once you are provided with the tools and the training, that is only a question of assertiveness, confidence in what you do, and understanding democracy here. And protect women and children,” he admonished.

The minister said the police and civilians must coexist, and expressed his intolerance of officers “beating” members of the public. He mandated that each police station be receptive to victims and perpetrators with regard to proper and due treatment.

“So, the police station – new one, headquarters and all those places, must be a welcoming place for the citizen, for the victim, even for the perpetrator, to hold and calm them down. It must be a welcoming place.”

For the country’s joint services, the home affairs minister disclosed that much injections are made for the carrying out of these agencies’ mandate, but noted that it is the GPF, as the country’s principal crime fighting organisation, which absorbs most of the investments.

“We are putting this effort in the police, in the fire service, in the prison system too, but much of it resides and rests with the police. Police are at the forefront of it.”

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Andre Ally, told the officers that the new facility was not crafted on a whim, but fits in with plans hatched by the ministry methodically.

“We have been strategically identifying all of the buildings that either need to be repaired, rehabilitated, or in this case, completely rebuilt. And we are doing so as a matter of priority.”

The ministry has over the last three years completed eighteen infrastructural projects in Region Six, the Permanent Secretary disclosed, which carries a total of almost $1.5 billion.

Seven more projects to the tune of $1.4 billion are currently underway, he added.

“In this region alone, for infrastructure, buildings, we have invested almost three billion dollars…why are we doing this? We are building out the right environment for you to work in, the permanent secretary stated.

Nearly two years ago, Wazeer Khan and Sons Construction won the bid to undertake the project by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The modern facility accommodates the operational room, traffic general office, data base management information unit, Information Technology room, traffic registry, case management, joint operational center room, CCTV/UPS room, the special constabulary, electrical room, the finance general office, general registry, a conference room, storage room as well as the commander and deputy commander’s offices, and the New Amsterdam licensing and certifying office.
