Kaieteur News – As the 2025 general and regional elections draw near, People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) presidential candidate Irfaan Ali on Friday night reminded part-time workers that it was his administration that created the 10-day worker initiative which has now employed thousands.
The National Pathway Workers Programme, launched in 2022 by the PPP/C, allows citizens to earn $40,000 monthly for 10 days of work. Government currently invests about $611 million monthly in the programme, which has created employment for some 15,283 persons.
Speaking at a public meeting at Bush Lot, Region Five, President Ali accused the opposition of hypocrisy for first attacking the initiative, but now promising on their campaign trail to increase the salary. “Who give y’all the job…now they promise to increase the salary,” he told supporters.
During his address, Ali revisited broken promises made by the former APNU+AFC administration and reminded his supporters of what is at stake in the 2025 elections. He cautioned voters against being swayed by campaign pledges of other parties.
The PPP’s presidential candidate also pointed to the investments his government has made in farmers, contrasting this with what he described as the coalition’s neglect. “And they come once again, once again. They come to you, and they say, rice farmers, we love you farmers, we love you. We will give you more. We will take care of you. We will lift you up…it is false promise,” Ali said.
Moreover, Ali urged Indigenous communities to be cautious of opposition “falsehood.” He reminded that it was the previous administration which axed the Community Service Officer (CSO) programme, a Ministry of Amerindian Affairs initiative that employed and trained Indigenous youths.
“They sent more than 2000 young Amerindians to the breadline. Today, they come again, and they say we love Amerindians, and we will give the CSO more. It is nothing but hypocrisy lies, and we must smash those lies on September one by voting overwhelmingly for the People’s Progressive Party,” Ali stated.
Speaking about PPP’s planned increase for the ‘Because We Care’ children’s grant, public assistance and the old age pension, Ali said these measures would see billions more being invested into households across the country.
He urged Region Five residents not to stop the development that his administration has started since August 2020, but instead to vote wisely to ensure it continues for the next five years.
“You’re voting for more money in your pockets. You’re voting for less taxes. You’re voting for direct support to the vulnerable. You’re voting for free education, world class health services. You’re voting for better roads, streetlights on every single light post, CCTV cameras to keep your family safe, better recreational facilities, you are voting for good grounds, sports facilities. You are voting to have a world-class horse-racing track here in Region Five. You are voting to empower our religious leaders because we will transfer money directly to the religious organization to help us. You’re voting for a stronger, more secure future for your children,” he stated.
Further, Ali explained that development is not only about roads, schools and hospitals, but also about building human capacity. “It is called the human capital, and you will live in a country where our salaries and benefits will be so good that those nurses, teachers, doctors, engineers that left our shores will be coming back home because home will give them a quality-of-life development,” Ali noted.
