Kaieteur Sports – Following the progress of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), the sport of amateur boxing and what has been seen in Guyana over the last few years, the St. Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA) has heaped kudos and recommended that Guyanese throw their support behind Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic presidential candidate.
Speaking on behalf of the SLBA, Shannon LeBourne, their First Vice-President, praised the country’s recent sporting achievements, linking them directly to government support.
He said, “Guyana continues to create champions across various sporting disciplines.” “Thankfully, the days of seeking out sponsors for athletes are over, as you now have a dedicated resource pool and a dedicated government investing in young people to get them to the next level.”
The St. Lucia Boxing Association cited government’s G$21.61 billion allocation over the past five years for sports development.
The SLBA pointed out that this level of funding highlights the government’s understanding of sport’s role in youth empowerment, community development, and national unity.
Urging Guyanese to continue the progress, LeBourne, highlighted two of Guyana’s most recent boxing stars, Abiola Jackman and Terron Wintz.
Jackman made history by becoming the first Guyanese boxer to win a gold medal at the Americas Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Elite Championships, while, Bernice-based Wintz, also clinched gold in the youth category of the Caribbean Boxing Championships.
He stated, “Guyana is doing the right thing, and it is important to stay with that momentum.”
