Kaieteur News – A gold miner from Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), had informed his brother that somebody wanted to kill him, a day before he was found dead.
Christopher Stephens’s body was discovered in the Puruni River on Monday.
Police said there was a chop wound to his forehead.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Kevin Blair recalled that his brother last contacted him during the early hours of Saturday morning.
“At 12:59 I wake up because my phone ring, when I check is me brother call. Blair told Kaieteur News, while adding that when he answered he heard his brother saying “Kevin somebody want kill me.”
“I say boy who want kill you out deh boy? He ain’t say nothing, he say somebody want kill he and lash he off he bike,” Blair recounted.
Blair said during the conversation with his brother, he instructed him to return to the campsite and refrain from being on the road too late, since he is not familiar with the area. Their conversation ended, and that was the last time he heard from Stephens.
According to Blair, at about 5 am the same morning, he contacted their mother Tasha Blair to relay what his brother told him. However, when they both tried contacting him again, he could not be reached.
Blair said he then made contact with persons from the Puruni area to search for his brother, but they did not find him, prompting him to make a missing person report to the police. On Sunday afternoon Blair received a photo of a body, but he could not confirm whether the remains were that of his brother at the time.
The following day the family’s’ worst fear was confirmed, when a sister, Tatianna Stephens, identified Stephens’s body.
Police have since launched an investigation in what is believed to be a murder.
Tatianna said that Stephens was new to the area and she does not believe he had an issue with anyone. According to the female Stephens, Blair and their mother had gone there to do gold mining. However, at the time, Blair was not around while the mother had traveled out to buy food items leaving Stephens and two employees at Purini.
On the day Stephens disappeared, he and the employees were on their way back to their mining camp from the Purini landing. Those employees said he told them to go to the camp, and he would ride behind them. They made it to the camp safely but he never arrived.
A day later he was found dead and his motorcycle was found parked at the Purini landing.
“Me brother is na no problem child, he doesn’t pick problem with nobody,” his grieving sister said, while noting that four persons have been detained for questioning.
