Kaieteur News – A 72-year-old woman died in an accident on Monday, along the Dochfour, Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Dead is Grace Lyte of Corentyne, Berbice.
The accident involved a motorcar bearing registration number PAH 8915 and a motor lorry bearing registration number GAG 8567.
The woman was an occupant of the motorcar, owned and driven by 46-year-old Thaddeus Lyte of Corentyne, Berbice. The motor lorry was driven by a 22-year-old resident of Soesdyke.
Investigations revealed that the lorry was proceeding east on the northern driving lane at a rate of 40 kmph, while the motorcar was proceeding west in the southern driving lane at a fast rate.
“The car overtook a line of traffic and collided head-on with the lorry in the southern carriageway. Both vehicles ended up in a trench on the southern side of the road,” police said.
As a result of the collision, Thaddeus and Grace sustained injuries and were picked up in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
Grace was pronounced dead at approximately 09:30hrs, while Thaddeus was treated and sent away. The woman’s body was placed in the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Thaddeus is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
