Kaieteur News – The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party is urging persons to desist from vandalising its party’s flag which have been placed on poles in communities across the country.
Representative of the WIN party, Hana Mohamed in a Facebook post on Saturday reminded that flags do not win elections, people do as she said the party is “heartbroken and outraged by the acts of desperation we are witnessing among supporters of the People’s Progressive Party. Our party flags are being torn down, trampled upon, and, in one case, even set ablaze. These are not just pieces of cloth. These are symbols of courage, beliefs and freedom.”
She noted that these actions not only affect the party but also those who worked in making and installing those flags.
“All of these people have been violated by the actions of a few thoughtless people. Worse still, while our property is destroyed, our supporters are being harassed, intimidated, threatened and even arrested simply for installing WIN flags,” she noted.
Hana Mohamed, who is the sister of WIN’s presidential candidate Azruddin Mohamed, noted that some of the party’s supporters were placed in a police vehicle at Yarrowkabra on the Linden highway. She claimed the supporters were “intimidated and threatened by police officers who said plainly that they were instructed to do this.”
“This is unacceptable and a blatant disregard to our fundamental and democratic right in our nation to exercise our freedom to choose a party of our choice,” she noted.
Noting of a recent event where their flags were vandalised, she related that in Region Three, the WIN flags were placed along the Schoonard to Crane Highway and just 48 hours later, they were shamefully stripped down.
“This desperate attempt to discourage voters from supporting WIN is useless. As our support continues to grow countrywide, we are urging those responsible for these acts in Schoonard, Region Three, on the Essequibo Coast, and in areas in Regions Five and Six, particularly areas around the Berbice Bridge, to desist from repeating this vandalism,” she urged.
She added that every citizen has a right to participate in the political process without fear, and the WIN party intends to defend that right.
Mohamed made it clear that come September 1, the citizens of Guyana will make their voices heard by choosing their leader.
