Kaieteur News – The Amerindian community of Batavia in Region Seven, is now furnished with its own nursery school which was constructed at a cost of $38 million.
Commissioning the new building on Thursday, was Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, who was joined by residents and education officials.
The ministry stated that for years, nursery-aged children in Batavia shared space within the community’s primary school. When the primary school was opened in 1998, it accommodated a nursery class to provide early childhood education. While this arrangement served the community for many years, it often meant limited space for both age groups.
The ministry noted that the new nursery school has given Batavia’s youngest learners a dedicated space designed specifically for their needs, while freeing up classrooms and resources for the primary-level students.
Minister Manickchand said the children of the hinterland are receiving all the resources being provided to the children in Georgetown.
She said the percentage of trained teachers has also increased from 43 per cent in the hinterland to 86 per cent.
“So, it’s qualitatively and quantitatively better and of course, the children in the hinterland not only get the cash grants, but they actually get more. For example, the teacher resources grant each child gets $5,500 in the hinterland, while on the coast, it’s $4,500 so hinterland education is doing far better, and you’re going to see the results shortly,” she added.
The National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) had awarded the $38,984,355 contract last year to B&S Contracting Service to execute the project following the national bidding process.
The project was realised after President Irfaan Ali, in May 2024, visited the village and announced plans to build a nursery school, noting it was part of his government’s commitment to enhance education in the community.
