Kaieteur News – A 19-year-old man was on Thursday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to robbery under arms. The accused, Andre Smith appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate, Faith McGusty who read the charge. It is alleged that Smith, on June 20, 2025 at Kitty Seawalls, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, robbed Kins James of one Samsung Galaxy A15 cellphone valued $50,000, a black wallet valued $5,000 which contained $50,000 cash total value of $105,000. During the court proceeding, a video of Smith committing the act was shown, prompting the magistrate to enquire the reason for him committing the robbery and whether it was his first time doing so. She lectured the teen about the importance of respecting others and their property.
James told the court that this was the first time he has committed a crime and charged from an offense. The court heard that the stolen items were recovered. Magistrate McGusty after learning that the accused was only 19, asked him whether that was the path he wanted to take at such a young age. Smith was then sentenced.
