Kaieteur News – Presidential candidate for the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed, has denied claims by his political rivals that he is in secret alliance with either of the country’s major political parties.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Mohamed declared that WIN is an independent movement focused solely on the people. Mohamed said, “I am not in no way shape or form aligned with the PPP, nor the APNU administration. It’s all lies. Bharrat Jagdeo is a very dishonest individual.”
He also noted, “…I’m in the middle. We have APNU here on the right. We have PPP on the left. They were so desperate, because they know that come, the 2nd of September, WIN will win the elections.
His comments were in response to claims by Vice President and People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, who accused A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) of secretly working with Mohamed’s WIN party to reduce PPP’s parliamentary majority to below 50 percent.
“You notice APNU doesn’t say anything adverse about the Mohameds or the AFC,” Jagdeo said at one of his recent press conference.
He added, “We’ve seen earlier the collaboration between APNU and AFC and the Mohameds. Their sole objective is to bring the PPP under 50 percent in the parliament. They know they can’t win the presidency. So that’s what they’re working towards…”
According to the Jagdeo, the opposition’s silence on Mohamed’s U.S. sanctions and alleged misconduct is a sign of the quiet alliance.
Meanwhile, APNU’s vice presidential candidate Ganesh Mahipaul had cautioned citizens to vote wisely and be wary of newly formed political parties that present themselves as independent.
He contended that there is a pattern where such parties gain support under the pretense of being neutral, but later align themselves with the PPP.
He said, “Records will show that virtually every one of them have, in their aftermath of securing votes from people under the disguise of being independent, end up being in bed with the People’s Progressive Party.”
Mahipaul had highlighted Manzoor Nadir, Dr. Asha Kissoon, and Lennox Shuman, all of whom formed independent parties, but later sided with the PPP. To this end, he said he believes Mohamed will be no different.
