Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – I was surprised to see Dr. Mahendra Carpen on the list of candidates for the PPP/C.
I hold Dr. Carpen in high regard as do many Guyanese. The son of a sugar worker, by dint of hard work he is now an accomplished interventional cardiologist.
So why am I surprised? He’s fully entitled to enter into politics as any other person is but I am surprised he has allowed his name to go on a list with persons who I think will only diminish him. On that list is an individual who was accused of rape and who was also accused of assaulting or attempting to assault the partner of his ex-wife.
And who was accused of sexually assaulting a young lady from Essequibo.
On that list is an individual who refused to give up her seat and disparagingly said “this is politics, this is not church”.
Not to mention another individual who was accused of domestic violence on two occasions and another individual who had land fraud charges against him which have apparently mysteriously disappeared just like the charges against several government officials and ministers. On this count – the Chambers of the DPP may have to answer to someone sometime in the future regardless of how long it may take.
I am particularly also concerned about the candidate who said “this is politics, this is not church”. Are the two mutually exclusive? So why the politicians – hypocritically visit the mandirs during Navratri and Shivratri, two very sacred festivals on the Hindu calendar. Are they trying to fool God?
The pandit should rebut the candidate by saying this is religion, this is not politics. By the way, many PPP ministers visit mandirs during these periods and give political speeches. This practice should cease.
Another point, Mr. Editor, is this call for manifesto and Meet the Press? Can we count the number of manifestos that have been printed since Independence? And where have they gotten us? Can we count the amount of promises that have been made over the past 60 years since Independence and where have they gotten us?
Can we count the number of press conferences and promises over the past 60 years, and where have they gotten us?
Those who are calling for plans and manifestos and speeches, please tell me on which manifesto was the Skelton Sugar Factory white elephant or the Fip Motilall Road to Amalia Falls. Or the Durban Park fraud on the nation with a set of old wood. On which manifesto were these multibillion dollar projects? With the biggest one yet to come, Gas to Energy, a USD $2B albatross around the necks of Guyanese. And can someone tell me what happened to the PPP manifesto / promise / press conferences that the oil contract signed by Trotman will be renegotiated. What happened to that promise?
We have had 60 years of promises, fooling, corruption, cronyism and outright fraud – none more so than in the last 5 years. So, Mr. Editor, people don’t want manifestos and press conferences and interrogation. People want some fresh faces, some fresh thinking to save this nation. And finally, Mr. Editor, I think the PPP should hang a portrait of Forbes Burnham outside of their building on Robb Street, because the transfer of the policeman who shook Azmo’s hand and the transfer of the GUYSUCO worker from Albion to Uitvlugt because he is a WIN supporter smacks of Burnhamism.
Regards,
H. Ramcharitar
