Kaieteur News – Dem boys seh friendship nowadays like cheap mosquito coil — it does burn fast and leave nuff smoke.
One time, you and a man deh like cassava and metem — always together, can’t separate. From small days, y’all did run boat, jump canal, and tek licks from y’all parents together. He used to come by you house and eat out yuh sugar cake and curry with one spoon, and still ask for a next plate. You give he shelter when rain falling, transport when he foot bruk, and protection when people wanted knock he head.
Now big man get lil position and small entourage, and suddenly you is “a man who never do nothing fuh he.” Is like he forget how you was de one who bail he out when dem boys from ‘cross de river was planning to pelt he with egg and accusations.
Dem boys seh is one thing when friends fall out — that does happen. Even rice and dhal does part ways sometimes. But real friends don’t bruk the same pot they eat from and then cuss you while holding the fork you lend dem.
Now de man deh pon stage and pon mic, talking like you is public enemy number one. And you deh home wondering how loyalty could disappear faster than pension money in an audit. One minute you is “brother fuh life,” next minute you is “political baggage.”
Dem boys seh he remind dem of Uncle Tulsie from Crabwood Creek. Tulsie and Boyo did lime every Sunday. Then Tulsie get a wuk at the RDC and stop talking to Boyo ‘cause Boyo driving a car with a lil dent. Now every time Tulsie pass Boyo, he does screw he face like if Boyo owe he tax.
Friendship nowadays ain’t got no mileage. As soon as power enter the chat, love gone like GPL current — sudden and without warning.
Dem boys seh, careful who yuh helping climb the ladder — ‘cause when dem reach up, some does forget who pass dem the first rung.
Talk half. Leff half.
