Kaieteur News – The $790 million motor tug ‘Arau’ was on Tuesday commissioned at the Kingston Goods Warf.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill commissioned the new motor tug which is the second vessel added to the maritime sector since 2020 and forms part of the government’s commitment to ensuring the capacity of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) is expanded.
In 2023, President Irfaan Ali commissioned a $535 million pilot vessel ‘Arapaima’ for the maritime sector.
Edghill said the acquisition of the Arau is part of the government’s commitment towards the expansion and modernization of the maritime sector.
“We are modernizing their fleet so their operational efficiency can be enhanced,” he said.
The minister also disclosed that more vessels are expected soon to address the demands of the transportation sector.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works in a statement said that the new vessel is a Damen Stan Tug 1606 vessel and carries a crew of six. Its addition to the current fleet will support safer towing of other vessels.
“The dual engine, 800 horse power vessel, the Arau, will also aid in the movement of barges and larger boats as well as executing pilot and surveying duties, when necessary,” the agency stated.
Kaieteur News reported that the vessel which arrived in the country last month was built by Dutch Company Damen, and is 16 meters long and six meters wide.
