Kaieteur News – The $159 million Leonora Fire Station located on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD) was commissioned on Saturday by Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn.
The new structure forms part of the broader initiative led by the Ministry of Home Affairs to establish a well-coordinated, well-equipped emergency response system throughout the region.
According to a press release from the ministry, the reconstruction was done at a cost of $159,270,255. The new fire station is set to serve communities from Parika to Vreed-en-Hoop and will bolster the operational capacity of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) significantly, improving its ability to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and disasters with greater efficiency and professionalism.
“As a further reinforcement of emergency coverage in the region, a new fire station is currently under construction in Parika and the Wales Fire Station, West Bank Demerara will soon be commissioned, which will serve as supplementary units to the Leonora and La Grange facilities. This expansion is part of a national push to decentralize emergency services and bring life-saving response capabilities closer to citizens throughout Guyana,” the ministry reported.
This publication understands that the new structure has been designed to meet the highest standards of functionality and personnel welfare and includes a range of administrative, operational, and living facilities that enable an integrated approach to emergency service delivery.
Also, among its key features are dedicated offices for critical command roles such as the Sub-Officer, Finance Officer, Station Officer, Officer-in-Charge (O.C.), Administrator, and Fire Prevention Officer. These spaces facilitate clear leadership and coordination of operations across departments. A Control Room and an Information Technology (IT) Room have been included to support real-time response management, surveillance integration, and incident tracking, ensuring rapid mobilization during emergencies.
“Personnel development and well-being have also been thoughtfully incorporated into the station’s design. A Training Room is available for ongoing education and simulations, while a fully equipped Gym promotes physical fitness and readiness among firefighters. In support of day-to-day functionality, the station contains a kitchen, canteen, and laundry room, creating a self-sufficient environment for staff on shift,” the ministry mentioned.
Additionally, the facility houses Male and Female Barracks, as well as Senior Officers’ Living Quarters, providing adequate and comfortable accommodations for round-the-clock personnel. An EMS Office has also been included to ensure that emergency medical services are seamlessly integrated into the fire station’s operations, enabling a rapid and comprehensive response to a wide range of public safety incidents.
Further, the ministry noted that the commissioning of the Leonora Fire Station not only signifies physical infrastructure development but also represents a broader vision of responsive, community-focused public safety.
