Kaieteur News – A 26-year-old labourer was on Friday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to a larceny charge.
The accused, Shawn Dover of Leopold Street Werk-En-Rust, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read by Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty.
It is alleged that on July 3, 2025 on Brickdam, Georgetown, Dover stole a purse containing one Republic Bank card, a national identification card, one Samsung S24 Ultra phone valued $250,000 and $48,790, total value being $298,790 from Chandralaka Chunilall.
The prosecution objected to bail due to the serious nature of the offence and the value of the items that were stolen.
Dover told the court that he was not aware of any bag, but he was riding past Chunilall when a police van drove into him and accused him of stealing a bag.
“Ma’am I was crossing the road and after passing she (Chunilall) two officers in a police vehicle run over me with the vehicle and started asking me way de bag deh, way de bag deh. Ma’am I didn’t even know bout no bag,” Dover said.
The matter was adjourned to August 8, 2025.
