Truck driver on $300,000 bail for discharging firearm

Kaieteur News – A 28-year-old truck driver, on Friday, was released on $300,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to two counts of discharging a loaded firearm with intent.

Jamal Hazel of Plum Park Sophia, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Annette Singh.

It is alleged that Hazel, on May 20, 2025 at Plum Park, Sophia, Georgetown, discharged a loaded firearm on Andra Stewart and Lidj Grant with intent to harm or disfigure them.

Hazel, Neagus Lamozon and Randolph Norton were all arrested in October 2024 after they were found with two pistols and several rounds of ammunition during a police intel-led operation at D’Urban Street, Georgetown.

Additionally, Stewart and Grant both appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on May 27, 2025 before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore. The two men were charged separately for discharging a firearm within a public place on May 20, 2025, at Plum Park, Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

Grant was released on $250,000 bail on the condition that he reports to the Turkeyen Police Station every other Friday starting May 30, 2025, while Stewart was denied bail due to him committing an offence while on bail for another serious offence. The matters were adjourned to June 30, 2025.

During yesterday’s court hearing, Hazel was represented by attorney Domnick Bess. The attorney told the court his client is not a flight risk since he was released on bail for his last offence and has always been present in court.

Bess said that while the offence is serious, bail is allowed. He argued that while there is video footage, it does not clearly show his client’s involvement. Bess told the court that his client has an alibi who can confirm that on the night in question, he was driving a truck and was not in Sophia where the incident allegedly occurred.

Bess noted that his client made himself available to the police when he heard they were in search of him.

Meanwhile, the prosecution objected to bail, noting that the defendant committed an offence while on bail for another serious offence. The court was told that there was a shootout between the defendant and the victims, while noting that the incident was caught on CCTV footage.

Magistrate Singh released Hazel on $150,000 bail for each of the charges without conditions since he is punctual with his court appearances.

The matter was adjourned to June 30, 2025.
