Kaieteur News – A 26-year-old man was on Friday remanded to prison for possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Larry Adams of Lot 70 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Annette Singh who read the charges.
Adams pleaded not guilty to the charges which alleged that on June 17, 2025, on Hadfield Street, Georgetown, he had in possession an astra 9mm glock 19 pistol firearm and 14 matching ammunition without being the holder of a firearm license.
The defense was led by Attorney Stacy Goodings who pleaded Adams’s case and requested bail on his behalf. Goodings told the court that on the evening in question her client was on his way to deliver cash and gold to his employer when he was intercepted by police at approximately 10pm on Wellington Street.
She added that the vehicle belongs to Adams’s father (name not mentioned) who works in the construction industry and often rents the car to others. The attorney noted that on the night of the incident her client borrowed the car, which was returned earlier that day by a renter, to do the delivery.
Goodings argued that the firearm did not belong to her client neither did he have any knowledge of it since it was found in the glove compartment of the car behind the filter for the Air condition (AC). The lawyer told the court that no fingerprints were found on the weapon, and there was no evidence suggesting that Adams had handled the firearm. It was also mentioned that Adams had recently returned from the interior and was not the only person with access to the vehicle.
However, the prosecution objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence, that the accused is not the holder of a firearm license and that he may be a flight risk. The court was told that earlier on the day in question Adams was stopped by police officers for reversing on a one-way street and when ranks asked to search the vehicle he reportedly locked the vehicle’s doors and drove away resulting in a chase.
Adams was later intercepted and a search done where the police found the firearm in the glove compartment area of the car. Investigators stated that the weapon was visible as soon as the panel was opened it fell to the floor of the car.
The prosecution said there is body camera footage of the interaction but that evidence was not presented to the court.
Magistrate Singh, after hearing both sides, stated that no special reasons for bail to be granted were presented and as a result the accused was remanded to prison until June 27, 2025.
The magistrate also ordered that the footage from the body camera be available by the next court date.
