Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It does not appear that any consideration was given to the welfare and convenience of the residents and businesses along the roadway at Grove, East Bank Demerara, in the widening of this section of the road. Even the optically impaired could clearly see that the space available for the widening of the road was grossly inadequate to accommodate two more lanes. The result, therefore, is absolute chaos.
Some the residents have awoken to find that their yards are now two feet and more below the newly built gutters outside their fences. And animals and strangers can easily step over the fences and into their yards. And what about those who are physically challenged, whether due to old age or illness? How are they going to get in and out of their yards? But not only that, residents who own vehicles have found themselves in a deep hole when it comes to getting their vehicles in and out of their yards. Many of the vehicles would have to be lifted out, as building a ramp in their yards in front of their gates would not help.
So, Editor, I am considering investing in the purchase of a Hi Up Canter truck. I foresee a big demand of this type of service along the roadway, because the only way a number of the people would get their cars in and out of their yards is by lifting them out.
Right now, it’s a nightmare to traverse this section of the roadway. And thousands have to do this every day. But what about those who live there – insanity is probably knocking on their very doors. So, you have to wonder why a caring government would inflict this kind of hardship on its people.
One has to question, not the wisdom, but the sanity of those who are responsible for this travesty. Why do those in authority decide to build a four-lane road in such cramped space? What about the residents’ rights to unhindered ingress and egress to their properties, and the quiet enjoyment of their homesteads? Where is the sensitivity that should be shown for people’s welfare? Is insanity the price one must pay for development?
Yours truly,
Dougla

Government has the right of imminent domain, to pay adequate compensation
for private property, or part thereof, to use for PUBLIC USE, when expansion
is necessary, for roads etc. Government land also in use as needed.
I remember when the East Bank Road to the Atkinson Field Airport, was only
2 LANES- one in opposite direction of traffic. What I see on websites is
some progress since the traffic has increased insanely, and drivers think they
are on the racing tracks. Citizens have to adjust around their surroundings
when the expansion is completed. Parking on the roadside MUST be stopped
to allow expansion. Parapets along roads are GOVERNMENT OWNED.
