Kaieteur News – With the new state-of-the-art Diamond Regional Hospital being commissioned, the Ministry of Health has officially announced the permanent closure of the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
The health ministry in a notice issued Monday, confirmed that all services previously offered at the diagnostic centre are now being provided at the newly opened regional hospital.
“Please be advised that the Diamond Diagnostic Centre has been permanently closed. All medical services previously offered there are now available at the Diamond Regional Hospital,” the notice stated.
The $6.6 billion Diamond Regional Hospital, located at Great Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was officially commissioned on Sunday. The new facility which offers free healthcare services, is the first of the six regional hospitals to be commissioned as part of a broader initiative to enhance access to quality healthcare across Guyana.
Built on four acres of land, the hospital features a modern two-storey structure with a total floor area of 6,000 square meters. It is fully air-conditioned and houses 75 hospital beds, with each room accommodating five patients and equipped with private washroom and toilet facilities.
The hospital also offers a wide range of 24-hour medical services, including an emergency department, laboratory, imaging services such as ultrasounds, postural scans, CT scans, and a dental suite. There are three fully equipped operating theatres, along with an additional theatre located in the emergency department for urgent surgical procedures. Each bed is fitted with a nurse call button to ensure prompt patient assistance. The facility is also equipped with its own oxygen plant, a blood bank system, and six mortuary chambers.
Meanwhile, the now-closed Diamond Diagnostic Centre, located at Diamond (EBD) originally established in October 2007, underwent upgrades in 2021 when it was transformed into a ‘smart hospital’ under a United Kingdom-funded initiative.
The smart hospital initiative, supported by the UK government, is part of an $835 million project aimed at upgrading five health institutions in Guyana into environmentally friendly, technologically advanced facilities. Upgrades at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre amounted to $222 million. Since the initial allocation for the upgrade was approximately $199 million, an additional sum of over $20 million had to be spent.
As part of the environmentally friendly design, the centre was equipped with a solar energy system, allowing it to generate its own electricity, reducing operational costs to the government. It also featured a rainwater harvesting system to further lower energy and water consumption costs.
Despite these modern upgrades, the Diamond Diagnostic Centre has now been fully decommissioned and succeeded by the Diamond Regional Hospital.
