Kaieteur News – Gavin Dowden, who was remanded to prison for possession of cannabis, was on Friday released on $200,000 bail for the same charge.
According to a statement from Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) posted on May 17, Dowden, during his first court appearance, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty.
It was alleged that the accused had 1.042 kilograms (kg) of cannabis in his possession. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded.
However, during Friday’s hearing, Dowden appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh, who released him on bail with conditions that he lodge his passport and report to CANU every Friday.
Dowden’s attorney requested bail on his behalf. The attorney told the court that his client is a businessman who has a welding shop in Sophia.
The lawyer further stated that on the day in question, his client was at a gas station when someone (name not mentioned) promised him money to drop a package. Dowden was told by the individual that they will return shortly, upon their arrival the person returned with CANU officers. The attorney contended that his client was framed, he reassured the court that his client is not a flight risk and will return to court.
The prosecutor objected to bail indicating that there are no special reasons for bail to be granted. He said on the day in question, the narcotics were found next to the accused in the driver seat. The prosecution requested that Dowden report to CANU should bail be granted.
Bail was granted and the matter was adjourned to July 11, 2025.
