Kaieteur News – With a massive pile-up of garbage at several areas in and around Georgetown, government has planned a national clean-up exercise for Sunday across the country.
Junior Minister of Public Works, Deodat Indar, engaged the Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Wednesday on the exercise to enhance Georgetown and communities across the country as part of the 10th National Clean-up Exercise. While lobbying the PSC for its continued support on the clean-up initiative, the minister noted that the administration is currently executing drainage and cleaning works in the capital city. Discussions continued on the steps to be taken by the private sector to reduce the improper disposal of commercial waste.
For its part, the PSC said that the clean-up exercise represents a powerful demonstration of our shared responsibility in preserving the environment and enhancing the health, safety, and beauty of our communities. “It is a national call to action that requires the collective commitment of every citizen, business, and organisation,” the PSC release stated.
“The PSC strongly encourages all citizens, private sector companies, and business leaders to come out in their numbers and participate actively in this important exercise. We especially invite our members to mobilise their teams, provide logistical support where possible, and help lead the charge in this vital civic initiative.”
According to the PSC, this 10th clean-up exercise is a clear reminder “that we must work toward long-term behavioural change.”
According to the organisation, while clean-up campaigns are necessary, the ultimate goal must be to create a culture of cleanliness where these large-scale efforts are no longer needed. “We therefore call on all stakeholders to promote ongoing awareness and continuous action to keep our surroundings clean, not just on June 8, but every day.”
The PSC said its member companies and Business Support Organisations (BSOs) from across all regions will be actively participating. “This collective nationwide mobilisation demonstrates the strength of our united private sector and its commitment to building a cleaner Guyana. Keeping Guyana clean is not only about aesthetics, but also about national pride, environmental sustainability, public health, and protecting our tourism and investment potential.” The organisation said that a cleaner Guyana benefits all. “Let us come together in unity and purpose to make a visible and lasting difference. Join us on Sunday, June 8, at 6:00 AM in your respective regions and communities, and play your part in building a cleaner, greener Guyana.”
Meanwhile, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is encouraging the business community to support the exercise. “Respect and care for the environment is of utmost importance, particularly as Guyana is currently experiencing the rainy season, and impact of clogged drainage channels and waterways during inclement weather,” GCCI said in a statement. According to the business body, there are several mobilisation points in Georgetown and across the country. “The Chamber is also urging businesses to ensure that they engage in proper waste disposal to prevent the accumulation of garbage along roadways and in the drainage systems. The GCCI underscores the importance of good environmental stewardship, particularly in pursuit of the health and well-being of our people.”
