Kaieteur sports- Defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Football Club delivered a brutal 17-0 thrashing of Mainstay Goldstar FC on Sunday evening at the National Training Centre (NTC), wrapping up last weekend’s fixtures in Season VII of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League.
Leading the charge was the relentless and clinical Stephen McDonald, who netted five goals in a commanding display for the reigning champions. GDF’s dominance underlined the gulf in class, while Mainstay Goldstar’s ongoing struggles continued, an epic reminder that: perhaps, their promotion to the League may have come a few seasons too soon. Still winless in the 2025 campaign, the side will hope to show technical improvement as the season approaches its mid-point.
GDF themselves endured a rocky start to the season, suffering an early setback against Den Amstel FC. However, they’ve bounced back strongly in recent matches. Though still trailing unbeaten table-toppers Slingerz FC, their form and tactical discipline will be under close watch as the competition intensifies.
Over the weekend, two matches were contested; one in Georgetown and the other in Berbice, offering fans nationwide a taste of elite football action.
At the NTC, GDF came out with an ultra-attacking mindset, with McDonald completing a first-half hat-trick (9’, 21’, and 30’) in just 30 minutes. Teammates Trayon Bobb and Delroy Ferdinand each added two goals before the break, giving GDF a commanding 7-0 lead at halftime.
Mainstay, already overwhelmed, returned for the second half looking dejected, and GDF showed no mercy. McDonald added two more to complete his five-goal haul (48’, 54’), pushing the lead further to 9-0. Bobb later completed his hat-trick to electrify the crowd, while Keron Spencer added a brace (59’, 63’), Amos Ramsay found the net twice (66’, 86’), Leshawn Myles scored in the 81st, before Colwyn Adams sealed the result with a late double to complete the 17-0 demolition.
Meanwhile, in Saturday’s fixture at Number 5 Ground in Berbice, Ann’s Grove United FC edged hosts Monedderlust FC 2-1. Yohance Francis opened the scoring in the 4th minute before Tyrone Delph equalized for Monedderlust. However, it was Alden Lawrence’s 89th-minute strike that secured all three points for the West Coast Demerara side in front of a spirited local crowd.
The GFF Elite League is made possible through the support of sponsors such as Blue Water Shipping, Turbo Energy, Merch Hut, NAMILCO, Guyana Beverages Inc., and others.
