Kaieteur News- The body of 11-year-old Adriana Younge arrived in the United States (U.S.) on Monday for a second autopsy and further forensic examination.
Credible sources confirmed that Adriana’s remains were flown out of Georgetown early Monday morning via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The flight made its first stop in Miami before continuing to Atlanta, where two U.S.-based pathologists will conduct an independent forensic review.
Sources close to the family told Kaieteur News that Adriana’s immediate relatives, including both parents, her siblings, an aunt, and her grandmother, departed Guyana on Sunday evening to accompany the body and support the ongoing investigation.
Adriana’s body was discovered on April 24 in the swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel and Bar in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. Her body was found approximately 20 hours after she had been reported missing during a family trip.
According to the family, after Adriana went missing, multiple searches were conducted around the hotel grounds, including the pool area, but she was not found. When her body was eventually discovered, her father, Subryan Younge, retrieved it from the water. Family members observed visible bruises and scratches on her knees, elbows, face, hands, and toes. Strikingly, she was found in an upright, standing position in the pool and reportedly showed no signs of bloating, an indication typically associated with drowning.
A post-mortem examination (PME) was conducted on April 28 by a three-member international pathology team: Dr. Shubhakar Karra Paul of Barbados, Dr. Gary Collins, Chief Medical Examiner of Delaware (U.S.), and Dr. Glenn Rudner of Mount Sinai Hospital (U.S.). The team concluded that the cause of death was drowning. However, they did not determine the time of death, nor whether Adriana had inhaled pool or tap water.
Unconvinced by the official findings, the family decided to seek a second autopsy in the U.S. despite government’s disapproval and police mishandling of the case.
The case has captured national attention and drawn international interest. According to their lead lawyer Dr. Dexter Todd, at least 45 foreign pathologists expressed interest in reviewing Adriana’s body. Trinidadian pathologist Dr. Daisley had initially been expected to return to Guyana to conduct a review, but after the Medical Board of Guyana halted the approval process, the family proceeded with international arrangements. Preparations to transport Adriana’s body to the U.S. began last Friday and were finalized over the weekend.
In an earlier interview with Kaieteur News, the family explained some of the things the U.S. pathologists will focus on during the second autopsy.
“They’re looking at things like how the body floated, how it was presented, and in relation to the marks that remain on certain parts of the body, which has raised concerns to them,” Dr. Todd said. “They are saying it requires a second eye, to be sure, and that is what they are looking at.”
With Adriana’s body now in the United States, her family and supporters hope the new forensic analysis will bring clarity to the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death.
Meanwhile, Guyanese police remain tight-lipped regarding the progress of the investigation. It was last reported that Leonard McCoshen, a retired officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), is in Guyana to assist the police force. However, the family continues to call for an international team to lead the investigation.
