…over Facebook statement, doctored map of Guyana
Kaieteur News- A 39-year-old businessman was charged with inciting persons to commit treason, was granted $350,000 bail on Thursday when he appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court.
Randy Jagdeo of Lot 159 Third Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
The businessman is accused of making a Facebook comment suggesting that Essequibo belongs to Venezuela. Further, he had displayed on his ‘Thousand Dollar Store’ located on the East Bank of Demerara a ‘One Guyana’ logo alongside a map of Guyana that excluded the Essequibo region.
Despite the prosecution objecting to bail Magistrate Bess granted it on condition that Jagdeo reports to the Head of the Police Cyber Crimes Unit at Eve Leary on the third Friday of every month.
Jagdeo is forbidden from making social media posts and was required to lodge his passport with the court.
The matter was adjourned to June 16, 2025.
